Staff of Life Natural Foods, a Santa Cruz Landmark specializing in farm to fork goodness was opened 50 years ago by Richard Josephson and Gary Bascou to address the growing demand for organic produce, natural meats and bulk shopping. From our beginning, in 1969 we have grown from a small natural foods bakery into a major natural foods supermarket that has become a Santa Cruz tradition. We are located at 1266 Soquel Avenue in Santa Cruz. Our building is certified by the city of Santa Cruz as a Green Building and is outfitted with a clean air system and many energy-efficient implantations such as daylight harvesting. Our parking lot provides electric car charging and is designed with Bios Swales to keep pollutants out of our ocean. In addition, we are a Santa Cruz “Clean Ocean Business”. Staff of Life received this recognition for compliance with the City of Santa Cruz Best Management Practices to help protect water and wildlife from pollution. Clean Ocean Businesses help the city meet their objectives of reducing pollution from stormwater protecting local creeks, the San Lorenzo River, and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
